MIAMI -- U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Ken Keen, military deputy commander of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), presented the Soldier's Medal to U.S. Army Maj. Jermain Sabbatt on June 17 at the command's headquarters in Doral.
During the presentation ceremony, the general recognized Sabbatt, a native of Haiti currently serving as deputy commander of the U.S. Embassy's Military Group in Port-au-Prince, for his actions in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti Jan. 12.
According to the medal citation, Sabbatt acted quickly following the disaster to transport a seriously injured Soldier to safety and search for a SOUTHCOM service member trapped in the rubble of Hotel Montana in Haiti's capital city.
The Soldier's Medal was established by Congress July 2, 1926 to recognize acts of heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy. Today, the Soldier's Medal may be awarded to any person of the U.S. armed forces or a friendly foreign nation to recognize acts of heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Army.
Sabbatt is the second U.S. Southern Command member recognized for heroic actions following the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti.
May 21, Keen presented U.S. Air Force Maj. Dorene Betsy Ross with the Airmen's Medal for her actions during the search for, and rescue of, a fellow Airman trapped in the rubble of the Hotel Montana.
Sabbatt is scheduled to be reassigned to Nigeria in August, where he will serve as Military Group commander at the U.S. Embassy.
